October 6, 2026 · Bolpur Santiniketan · ,

Important Travel Notice: Santiniketan Heritage Walk Closed on Select Dates

If you are planning an autumn getaway to Santiniketan, here is an important advisory to keep handy while planning your daily itinerary.

Visva-Bharati University has issued an official notification announcing the temporary suspension of the guided Heritage Walks inside the UNESCO Core Heritage Area, as well as the weekly prayer services (Upāsanā) at the iconic Upasana Griha (Glass Temple).

As an independent local guide for Bolpur and Santiniketan, we are sharing these dates so you can schedule your visits without any last-minute surprises.

1. Visva-Bharati Heritage Walk Closure Dates

The guided walking tours through the UNESCO Core Heritage Area will not take place on the following dates:

  • 10 October 2026 (Saturday): Closed on account of Ananda Bazaar.

  • 15 October 2026 (Thursday) to 27 October 2026 (Tuesday): Closed due to Śaradāvakāśa (Autumn / Puja Vacations).

What this means for you: If you plan to join the official heritage walk batches around these dates, schedule your slot before 15 October (excluding Saturday, 10 October) or after 27 October.

2. Weekly Upasana (Prayer Service) Suspension

The serene Wednesday morning prayer service at the Upasana Griha (Kanch Mandir) is a deeply cherished experience for many visitors.

  • The weekly upāsanā will remain suspended from 17 October 2026 to 13 November 2026 as both Patha-Bhavana and Siksha-Satra will be closed for the Śaradāvakāśa break.

  • Regular weekly upāsanā services will resume on 18 November 2026.

Tips for Visiting Santiniketan During the Festive Break

Even while the core ashram walks and prayer services observe these scheduled closures, autumn in Santiniketan remains magical:

  • Witness Ananda Bazaar (10 October): Celebrated annually on Mahalaya, Ananda Bazaar at Gour Prangana is one of Santiniketan’s most joyful traditions, featuring student-made food, handcrafted games, and festive cheer.

  • Explore Sonajhuri & Kopai River: The weekly Sonajhuri Haat, forest trails, and the picturesque Kopai riverbanks with blooming kash flowers remain open for travellers.

  • Check Museum Timings: If you wish to visit the Rabindra Bhavana Museum and Uttarayan Complex, check counter availability on the spot, as university holiday schedules may adjust standard entry hours.
