About Sanskar Bhawan

Sanskar Bhawan, meaning “House of Culture” or “House of Values” in Bengali, is one of the heritage houses associated with the early Santiniketan Ashram, founded in 1863. The house was built to serve as a residence for teachers, students, or guests, fostering an environment of learning and cultural exchange. Its name reflects the Ashram’s commitment to nurturing moral and cultural values through education and community living.

The architecture of Sanskar Bhawan is characterized by its modest design, featuring mud-plastered walls and a structure that blends seamlessly with Santiniketan’s natural surroundings. Like other Ashram houses, it was constructed with simplicity and functionality in mind, aligning with Tagore’s vision of a community free from social hierarchies. Sanskar Bhawan stands as a symbol of the Ashram’s enduring legacy and contributes to Santiniketan’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.
