From Alumnus to Leader: Dr. Ghosh’s Journey at Visva-Bharati!

Santiniketan’s prestigious Visva-Bharati University has finally welcomed a permanent Vice-Chancellor after a gap of 15 months. On March 18, 2025, Dr. Probir Kumar Ghosh took charge, bringing fresh hope and energy to this iconic institution founded by Rabindranath Tagore. For those planning a visit to Santiniketan or curious about its academic legacy, this is exciting news worth knowing!
Dr. Ghosh is no stranger to this place. He was a student here from 1981 to 1985, so it’s like coming back home for him. Born in Murshidabad, West Bengal, he studied in local schools before joining Visva-Bharati. Later, he became a big name in agriculture, working with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and even leading a national institute in Chhattisgarh. Now, at 62, he’s back to lead the university where his journey began.
Why This Feels Special
Visva-Bharati hadn’t had a full-time Vice-Chancellor since November 2023, when the last one, Bidyut Chakraborty, left. Dr. Ghosh’s five-year term, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, means things can settle down now. On his first day, he spoke to the media at the university’s office and shared some ideas about making things better—keeping Tagore’s dreams alive while adding new energy.
What’s Coming for Santiniketan?
If you’re planning to visit Santiniketan, Dr. Ghosh might make it more fun! He’s talking about letting tourists back onto the campus, though they’re still figuring out how to do it. With his past as a student here and now as the boss, he knows this place inside out. He wants to mix the old charm with some fresh changes.
A Student Turned Leader
Dr. Ghosh’s story is pretty cool. He started as a student walking around Santiniketan, then worked hard to become an agriculture expert, and now he’s the leader of Visva-Bharati. It’s like a dream come true for him—and a big deal for this famous university. So, when you visit, you’ll see a place led by someone who once studied under its trees!
Exciting times ahead for Visva-Bharati!
