About Santoshalaya

Santoshalaya, meaning “abode of peace” in Bengali, is one of the heritage houses of the Santiniketan Ashram, established by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore in 1863 and later nurtured by his son, Rabindranath Tagore. The house was originally built to serve as a residence for the Ashram’s residents, including teachers, students, or guests, and it reflects the Ashram’s core values of equality, simplicity, and community living.

The architecture of Santoshalaya is modest, with mud-plastered walls and a minimalist design that blends with the natural surroundings of Santiniketan’s red-soil landscape.
