Gairik is a significant heritage house located within the Visva-Bharati University campus in Santiniketan, Bolpur, West Bengal. As part of the cultural and historical legacy of Santiniketan, founded by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and expanded by his son, Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Gairik represents the simplicity and community spirit of the early Santiniketan Ashram.
Gairik, named after the reddish hue of ochre or red soil, is one of the heritage houses built during the early years of the Santiniketan Ashram, established in 1863. The house was constructed to accommodate teachers, students, or guests of the Ashram, reflecting Tagore’s vision of a community where education and equality thrived. Like many other Ashram houses, Gairik was designed with functionality in mind, featuring mud-plastered walls and a modest structure that harmonized with Santiniketan’s natural landscape.
Though some of the original Ashram houses were destroyed over time, Gairik remains a surviving example of the Ashram’s architectural and cultural heritage. It stands as a reminder of the egalitarian principles that shaped Santiniketan, where people from all backgrounds lived and learned together. Gairik’s historical significance contributes to Santiniketan’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.
