Visva-Bharati Santiniketan to Reopen for Tourists from October
After nearly five years of restricted access, Rabindranath Tagore’s Santiniketan Ashram is finally set to welcome tourists again. According to a recent update from the Visva-Bharati University authorities, the historic campus — now declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site — will be open to visitors by the end of September or early October 2025.
Why Was It Closed?
The Visva-Bharati campus was closed to tourists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, public access remained restricted due to administrative concerns. Now, with safety measures and a structured tourism model in place, the university is ready to open its gates.
Official Confirmation from Authorities
Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty recently confirmed that preparations for the reopening are in progress. Tourists will be allowed to visit select parts of the Ashram by booking tickets in advance. A curated “Heritage Walk” will be introduced to provide a guided experience of the historic campus.
What Can Tourists Expect?
Tourists will explore some of the most iconic landmarks of Visva-Bharati:
- Patha Bhavana – Tagore’s open-air school
- Chatimtala – Tagore’s meditation spot
- Upasana Griha – Prayer Hall
- Singha Sadan
- Kala Bhavan, Kalo Bari, and other art hubs
- Sangeet Bhavan – featuring a live cultural performance at the end of the tour
Heritage Walk Guidelines
The campus will not be open for free roaming. Tourists must follow these guidelines:
- Visits are allowed only on Sundays
- Each day will include 4 guided tour batches
- 1-hour duration for each batch
- Group-based entry — no solo entry or free movement
- Advance ticket booking is mandatory
Ticketing Details
While the exact ticket price is yet to be announced, officials confirmed that online ticket booking will be introduced. On-the-spot ticketing may not be available initially.
The program will serve as a pilot project, and if successful, the heritage walk could expand to other days starting in November.
A Cultural Revival Begins
This initiative is a major step in reconnecting the public with the cultural legacy of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. From educationalists to travelers and cultural enthusiasts, this is a rare opportunity to walk through the heart of India’s literary and intellectual renaissance.
