Spread of Education ...

In Bolpur including other villages, had no educational centre till 1810. About 1810/11 an employee of British Govt. gave a report after visiting Birbhum district ".. There was no school, either public or private in the district of Birbhum". Near about 1823 Birbhum district magistrate Mr. garett proposed ".. that school should be established where pupil could be kept as much and as far as long a period as possible fond the contaminating society of their ignorant and superstitious reletives- ."(Data taken from Birbhum Gazetter).

In that time a teacher named Kuber Pandit taught only five pupils on Jamindar house of Surul.Few years later some initiative people Adharchandra Roy, Tinkori Ghosh, Rakhalchandra Chattyapadhya took a step to establish a school. Sudhamoyee Devi took the initiative for female educational system.

Festivals at Santiniketan

Basanta Utsav

It is a colorful festivals for all Indians and known as Holi. It occurs at the end of winter when spring comes with its beauty. Falgun and Chaitra according to the Bengali calendar is the season of Dol utsav.

Bolpur subdivision is located at south border of Birbhum district. About 150 years ago Bolpur was a small villege under supur porgana. But now it has become an international city. Kalikapur a known place of Bolpur was the origin of the villege in past.

Santiniketan has the distinct identity of culture and heritage, which gives the place a unique soft touch. Santineketan was previously called Bhubandanga (named after Bhuban Dakat, a local dacoit). Tagore family came to be owned this place.

Visva Bharoti has two main parts. Srineketan and Santineketan both are consistently called Visva Bharoti. The towns and the university are situated not too far away from the river Kopai which flows to the south.
